The UK鈥檚 creative sector is thriving, with film and television production contributing over 拢6 billion to the economy in 2022 alone. A significant part of this growth comes from the increased reliance on high quality visual effects (VFX), prosthetics and model making to keep the pace with growing international production standards. For students seeking a career in a fast-paced, creative environment, Film FX degrees offer a direct route into the industry, but not all degrees are created equal.
At the University of Greater Manchester, our students don鈥檛 just study theory. They gain real-world insight into what it takes to succeed behind the scenes of major productions. With a curriculum built around current industry practices, live project briefs and connections with working professionals, you will graduate to the standards of the country鈥檚 leading studios.
One of the key advantages of our Film FX courses is the active involvement of lecturers with direct experience in the film, TV and gaming industries. Their professional insight helps shape a practical curriculum covering everything from concept design to final application. Students build essential skills in sculpting, mould-making, animatronics, character design and prosthetics, which are all highly sought after skills in modern productions.
Our facilities are built to professional studio standards, with a casting and moulding room, a computer suite for digital concepting, sculpting studios, make-up and hair application studios and our own photography area with lighting and backdrops.
Rather than working in isolation, our students often take part in collaborative projects with their peers from other areas like special effects, digital media and game design. Our annual FX showcase allows final year students to present their portfolios to visiting professionals and recruiters, many of whom are actively hiring for upcoming productions. Previous students have gone on to work on major franchises, including Ackley Bridge, Coronation Street, Ant Man (2023), and Napoleon (2023).
Students are also encouraged to enter national and international competitions such as the WorldSkills UK and Rookies awards. These platforms offer exposure and validation for their work, and ensure students have regular access to industry feedback directly from networks they鈥檒l rely on upon graduation.
Graduates with a Film FX degree can pursue careers in film, television, live events, interactive media and even theme parks. Some common job titles include prosthetic technician, FX artist, model maker, character designer and concept artist. Thanks to the University of Greater Manchester鈥檚 focus on career readiness and technical excellence, our alumni have gone on to readily find roles with post-production houses, independent studios and even on international co-productions.
By maintaining strong relationships with employers and staying aligned with industry developments, our students graduate with the qualifications, confidence, connections and portfolio needed to enter a competitive sector.
