Professor of Public Humanities

Islam Issa is a multi-award-winning author, broadcaster, and curator.听A literary critic and historian, his work focuses on cultural history and the reception of English听literature in global contexts.

In 2022 he was conferred to Professor of Literature and History, and in 2025 the Vice-Chancellor appointed him the UK's first Professor of Public Humanities.

Through an international repertoire of publications, exhibitions, media appearances, and speaking tours,听Islam is a public humanities practitioner who brings pioneering approaches and fresh narratives to the fields of literature, history, and cultural studies.

Islam has authored six books:听Milton in the Arab-Muslim World, Milton in Translation,听Digital Milton,听Shakespeare and Terrorism,听Milton Across Borders and Media, and Alexandria: The City that Changed the World.

He has curated three exhibitions:听the internationally acclaimed听Stories of Sacrifice, and听Shakespeare in South Asia听补苍诲听Ageless Cleopatra, both at Shakespeare's Birthplace.

He has presented the TV documentary听Cleopatra and Me (BBC Four), four听radio documentaries:听Shakespeare and Terrorism,听The Balcony, Forbidden Fruit,听and听Shakespeare's Brum Ting听(BBC Radio 3), and the听flagship arts talkshow听Free Thinking (BBC Radio 4). He has featured听on听such networks as BBC Two, History Channel, and Netflix.

His awards include the Times Higher Education Research Project of the Year, the Anglo-Hellenic League听Runciman Award,听the Milton Society of America First Book Award听补苍诲 Irene Samuel Award听(twice), the Muslim News Awards Excellence in Community Relations听prize, and the Greater 天美传媒 Chamber of Commerce Future Face of 天美传媒.听To date, he has secured funding totalling over 拢2 million.
